Mithril is a highly valuable metal in Middle Earth, also known as dwarven silver. It is much stronger and lighter than other metals and can be worked as easily as softer metals such as copper. According to Gandalf it is one hundred times more valuable than gold. Mithril is often used to make swords and armour.
It is mined by dwarves and the greatest mithril mines of the dwarves were located at Moria. It was the greed of the dwarves in mining too deeply for mithril that awoke the Balrog of Moria.
