Minas Morgul/Minas Ithil
When Elendil and his people arrived in Middle Earth, his two sons established the kingdom of Gondor which they ruled jointly from two cities. Minas Arnor (Tower of the sun) on the west of the Anduin River and Minas Ithil (Tower of the moon) to the east. Minas Ithil was ruled by the elder son Isildur.
In the 2000th year of the Third Age Minas Ithil was attacked and taken by the Nazgûl. It was then renamed Minas Morgul and was ruled by the Nazgûl until Sauron was defeated.
Isildur built Minas Ithil above the lands of Ithilian to watch over the lands of Mordor. After it's capture by the Nazgûl, Sauron was able to use it to watch over his own minions in Mordor as well as a defence against Gondor.
