Maiar

The Maiar were a lower order of Ainur (below the Valar) and as such, were the demi-gods of Middle Earth in a sense. Many of them assisted certain of the Valar. They are far more numerous than the Valar but their exact number is not known.

Some of the more notable Maiar were:

Eönwë, the herald of Mandos.

Ilmarë, the handmaid of Varda.

Melian served both Vána & Estë. Later, she married the elven lord Elwë (later known as king Thingol). She protected the lands of Doriath from evil for a long time with the girdle of Melian. She was the only one of the Ainur to ever marry with the children of Ilúvatar. Through their daughter Luthien, the blood of the Ainur was passed down to many of Middle Earth's most notable figures including Elrond and Aragorn.

Olórin was the wisest of the Maiar. In the 3rd age of Middle Earth, he was sent by the Valar as one of the 5 Istari to aid in the struggle against the Dark Lord Sauron. He then became known by the elves as Mithrandir and by men as Gandalf the Grey.

Ossë, vassal of Ulmo though he is more inclined to stay near the ocean shores rather than the depths of the oceans. He delights in storms on the sea (and is usually the cause of them). He had a special fondness for some of the seafaring elves who lived by the sea.

Uinen is the wife of Ossë and loves the streams and rivers. Sailers often cried to her because she alone could calm the storms made by Ossë.
